Bookkeeping categories

What category is Toast in bookkeeping?

A Toast payout into your bank is usually Sales Revenue. Even Margin categorizes it that way and asks you to confirm it. Money going to Toast can be a fee, a refund or a purchase, so Even Margin uses your bank's category for it, or asks you when the bank gives none.

What Toast charges are

Toast runs card payments for restaurants, at the table, the counter and online, and pays the sales out to your bank after its fees.

How Even Margin categorizes Toast

Sales Revenue. Payouts categorized, then sent to your review list.

  • Even Margin recognizes Toast on your bank transaction, using the merchant list its team curates.
  • A Toast payout into your bank is categorized as Sales Revenue at medium confidence and goes to your review list to confirm.
  • Money going to Toast takes your bank's category for it. When the bank gives none, it goes to your review list for you to choose.

When a different category fits

Whatever category you pick for a Toast transaction stays: Even Margin never overwrites a choice you made.

  • A refund you give a guest through Toast is Sales Returns & Refunds.
  • Toast's software subscription, charged on its own, is Online Software.
  • Toast Payroll is payroll, under People & Payroll.

I ate at a restaurant and my statement says TST*. Is that Toast?

It is the restaurant, paid at its Toast terminal. Even Margin treats a TST* line as the restaurant and never as a Toast payout, and your bank's category decides, so a client lunch can land in Meals. Other statement codes work the same way.

Why doesn't a Toast deposit match the night's sales?

Toast pays out after its fees and any refunds, and one deposit can cover more than one day. Toast's own payout report lists what each deposit holds.
